Why it works
Basswood vs MDF — Choosing the Right Material

Basswood offers a natural grain and lightweight feel that’s ideal for projects where you want the wood texture to show through stain or translucent paint. Its tight grain means less wood filler is needed before painting, and the material is easy to carve or route if you plan to add texture.

Sizing Guide — From Mini Tags to Statement Wall Art

One-inch letters work best for gift tags, ornament personalization, and scrapbook titles where space is limited. The small profile fits inside shadow boxes and doesn’t overpower delicate layouts.

Mid-Range Sizes for Versatile Use

Four- to six-inch letters anchor nursery name signs, chalkboard borders, and tabletop displays without requiring special mounting hardware. These sizes are readable from 8 to 10 feet away, making them the go-to choice for party decor and classroom projects. When working with vintage frames or repurposed windows, mid-range letters fit standard opening dimensions without custom cutting.

Finishing Techniques That Bring Wood Letters to Life

Acrylic craft paint is the fastest finish for basswood and MDF letters. Apply two thin coats with a foam brush to avoid brush strokes, letting each coat dry 30 minutes. For a distressed farmhouse look, sand edges lightly after the final coat dries to reveal raw wood underneath.

Stain and Seal for Natural Beauty

Wood stain penetrates basswood’s grain to highlight natural texture while keeping the surface smooth. Apply stain with a foam brush, wipe excess with a lint-free cloth after two minutes, then seal with clear polyurethane once dry. This method works beautifully on script letters where you want the wood grain to enhance the cursive flow.

Jumbo letters hold up outdoors
We mounted the 10-inch letters on our front porch and they’ve survived rain and sun for six months. The exterior plywood is solid and the pre-drilled holes made installation easy. Best outdoor craft purchase I’ve made.

MDF letters are decoupage-friendly
I covered 6-inch MDF letters with vintage book pages using Mod Podge. The smooth surface held the paper without bubbles and the sealed edges didn’t swell when I brushed on layers of glue. Came out perfect.

Questions About Our Wooden Letters & Craft Wood

Basswood is a natural hardwood with visible grain that shows through stain or translucent paint. It’s lightweight and easy to carve or sand. MDF is an engineered material with an ultra-smooth, grain-free surface ideal for solid paint colors and vinyl application. MDF is denser and resists denting better than basswood.

Both materials accept acrylic paint equally well. Choose basswood when you want natural wood texture to be part of the design, and MDF when you need a perfectly smooth finish for bold colors or metallic spray paint.

Basswood and standard MDF letters are designed for indoor use. For outdoor projects, choose our 10-inch jumbo letters made from exterior-grade plywood. Seal outdoor letters with three coats of outdoor polyurethane or marine varnish, letting each coat dry completely.

Reapply sealer every 12 months to maintain weather resistance. Avoid mounting letters in spots where they’ll sit in standing water or receive constant direct rain exposure.

Store unfinished letters in a climate-controlled space away from moisture and direct heat. Once you finish letters with paint or stain, seal all surfaces including edges and backs to lock out humidity. MDF letters should have their edges sealed before painting to prevent swelling from water-based paints.

If letters do warp slightly, place them under a weighted board overnight in a dry room. Severe warping usually means the wood absorbed moisture before finishing—always seal letters within 48 hours of purchase.

Four-inch letters are readable from 8 feet away and fit comfortably on standard nursery walls or above desks. Six-inch letters provide better visibility in larger rooms and from across hallways. Eight- to ten-inch letters are best for high ceilings, porches, or spaces where people view the display from 15 feet or more.

Consider the wall space available—smaller letters get lost on expansive blank walls, while oversized letters can overwhelm a narrow hallway.

Basswood and MDF from our collection arrive pre-sanded and ready for paint without primer. If you’re using light colors over dark wood or covering knots, one coat of white acrylic primer will prevent bleed-through. For spray paint, primer helps the color adhere evenly and dry faster.

Skip primer entirely if you’re staining letters—primer blocks stain absorption. For decoupage or Mod Podge projects, apply your adhesive directly to the bare wood surface.

Standard basswood letters measure 1/8 inch thick, making them ideal for scrapbooking and lightweight displays. MDF block-style letters are 3/4 inch thick with a chunky profile that stands upright on shelves. Script letters come in 1/4-inch birch plywood for stability while preserving delicate swash details.

Jumbo outdoor letters are 1/2 inch thick to resist warping in weather. Thickness affects not just durability but also visual impact—thicker letters cast shadows that add dimension to displays.

Basswood and birch plywood letters can be drilled, sanded, or routed with standard woodworking tools. Use a 1/16-inch drill bit for pilot holes and a fine-tooth blade if cutting custom shapes. MDF letters drill cleanly but create fine dust—wear a mask and work in a ventilated area.

For hanging, drill a hole 1/4 inch from the top back edge. Apply a small amount of wood glue around the hole after drilling to seal the exposed core and prevent moisture absorption.
